  Located in the western region of the country in the province of Chiriquí, Volcan Baru National Park encompasses part of the central mountain range and is limited by La Amistad International Park and Palo Seco protective forest. Baru Volcan is Panama's highest mountain - ranging  3475 meters above sea level, the highest elevation in Panama.  In the early mornings it's possible to have a view of both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean at the same time!
 

Volcan Baru National Park can be accessed from two areas:1st - from Boquete on the eastern side of the park, along a rocky 14 km road that arrives at the top 0r 2nd - from Cerro Punta, on the western side of the park from the Respingo site, where the National Authority of the Enviroment (ANAM) has a refuge and a visitor's center.

In the cloud forest of Volcan Baru we find a species of bird like no other- the Resplendent Quetzal, considered by some to be the most beautiful bird in the world.  Resplendent Quetzals rely heavily on the fruit of wild avocados for food. The breeding season for Resplendent Quetzals lasts from March though June or July. The birds nest in dead trees and stumps 3-20 meters (10-60 feet) above the ground.
